Chapter Nine

“I’m still not completely clear on the improv game,” Shepard admitted to Tyler as they wheeled the giant whiteboard back into the gym. They’d arrived more than half an hour early to set up the amps and equipment and get the whiteboard in position. They’d also stopped off at a cute stationery and art supply store to buy an assortment of dry erase markers.

“It’s a game, so it’s supposed to be fun and warm up the kids.” She made a goofy face at him. “But it’s also to ensure that they know all the lyrics to the songs we’ve taught them this week, and I’m thinking we can build on the game.”

“How so?”

She loved how he sounded so intrigued. And how he gave her his full attention whenever they were talking or working on something. She was not used to that at all.

“I’m not totally sure,” she confessed. She wanted to be reticent until she had it all planned out, but Shepard was her partner in the sing-off, and so she had to be brave and take the plunge to share her ideas.

“But…?” he led her on, and she couldn’t help smiling. His curiosity and openness always gave her a boost of confidence.

“I thought that if we could sing some of the carols like a mash-up or shout-out style by breaking the kids up in small groups, it would be unexpected, making them stand out—not just be popular because they are cute kids but because they have a unique style and voice. And it would be something they could pull out when we are taking turns singing. And possibly use to assign solos.”

“I screwed up the plan this morning on the way back when you tried to teach me the game,” he admitted. “I’m sorry we didn’t get through the examples.”

“Let’s practice now,” she said, fighting the urge to hug him. The kids were likely to start trickling in within the next ten minutes. That wasn’t a rumor she wanted to launch.

She swung up her guitar and launched into “Oh Come All Ye Faithful.” She sang part of the first verse and then pointed to Shepard when she hit the second “Oh come ye to…”

“Go. Another song.”

And he froze.

She stopped.

“Sorry,” he said. “I told you I didn’t sing a lot of Christmas carols growing up.”

“But you’ve been listening to them with me at night and when you’ve been helping set up the Christmas lights with Dawson’s crew around the hotel. I’ve seen you with earbuds in, and I’ve seen your playlist.”

“I don’t want to let you down,” he said.

“You won’t. It’s just a warm-up, a game. It’s supposed to be fun.”

He nodded.

“It’s like the Imagine Dragons’s song ‘Thunder’ with Khalid’s ‘Young Dumb and Broke’ only with a line or two so it’s faster-paced.”

“Sounds almost like what I would imagine cheerleaders at a high school football game would do—get the crowds to shout out their school cheers to see which side could make the most noise.”

“Exactly,” Tyler said. “I definitely wasn’t a cheerleader.
